Reviewed with Geoff Teece's Buddhism. Gr. 3-7. The new Religion in Focus series features a slim format, lots of color photographs, and unnuanced introductions to its subjects. Christianity begins with a short history of Jesus that incorporates the best-known bits from gospel stories and moves on to Christian beliefs, spotlighting the most commonly held ones: the Holy Trinity, Jesus as God incarnate, and the sinful nature of humans. The chapter on Christian values and character discusses love, joy, humility, and peace. Other chapters include information on the Bible, various churches and different forms of worship, Christian festivals, sacred places, and the Eucharist. A helpful addendum lists the various denominations and their main features. Buddhism covers similar topics, beginning with the life of Buddha, but focusing mainly on the precepts by which Buddhists live. The author has unfortunately chosen to use a less-common form of spelling for Buddhist words, which he states in a brief note. Kids won't be familiar with most of the words in either spelling, but there are a few, such as karma, they might know. To see it spelled kamma is confusing. IleneCooper.
